Wills

Wills are a common way for a person to state their preferences about how their estates should be handled after their death. A well written will can help the survivors by transferring property efficiently & avoiding tax burdens, as well as to give peace of mind that their loved one's wishes are being carried out.

Wills can vary from very simple documents to elaborate multi-paged volumes, depending on the preferences of the person making the will. They describe the estate, how it will be distributed, and even special instructions such as care of children and pets, gifts to charity, or creation of posthumous trusts.

A will must follow the formal requirements of the state it is located in. These requirements vary from state to state. Wills must be written, signed, and witnessed. A valid will remains in force until revoked or superseded by a subsequent valid will.

Estate Planning

Estate planning is an important step for any person to make sure their final property and health care wishes are carried out and that their loved ones are provided for after they die. An estate consists of:

  • Personal property such as collections, art, automobiles
  • Life insurance policies
  • Stocks or other securities
  • Bank accounts
  • Real estate

Proper estate planning can minimize the amount of taxes that will need to be paid in order for your assets to pass to others after your death.

It can also help dictate the kinds of life-prolonging medical care you receive should you be unable to make your wishes known, and can help set forth the kind of funeral arrangements you would like.
